Cuesta of Waasland in Waasmunster

This area lies west of Waasmunster, on the cuesta front of the cuesta of Waasland. The cuesta of Waasland is a subcuesta of a larger complex; the cuesta of the clay of Boom. Along the cuesta front, which is oriented southwards, the height varies between 25 and 50 meters. The cuesta of Boom is, besides being cut by the Flemish Valley, also intersected by two other major breakthrough dams, allowing for the distinction of three subcuestas: that of the Land of Waas, located west of the breakthrough valley; that of the Land of Boom, located between the last breakthrough valley and that of Lier; and further eastward, the subcuesta of Heist-op-den-Berg. At each of these subcuestas, the morphological ridge extends quite far northward. The Clay of Boom only outcrops in a southern border strip; further north, the top surface is covered by sands. The Rupelian is the main deposit of the Land of Waas (Boom clay). The Rupelian is characterized by a sandy facies and a younger level that has a clayey facies. Due to the monoclinal structure and the gentle north (northeast)-facing slope of the Rupelian clay layers, the asymmetrical cuesta relief of the Land of Waas was formed at Waasmunster. In the south, the cuesta front of the Clay of Boom marks the boundary between the Land of Waas and the lower-lying subsequent Durme valley at its foot.
