Valley of the Old Kale

The Old Kale between Merendree and Vinderhoute still flows in the valley as it was formed after the last Ice Age (around 10,000 BC). What is currently called the Old Kale was once part of a much larger drainage system. This ran from Tielt over Aalter to Nevele (the present Poekebeek) and then to Landegem, Merendree, and Vinderhoute (the Old Kale). Downstream, there was then a connection with the Moervaart in Wachtebeke. In the past, the Poekebeek, the Kale, and the Durme formed one river to the Scheldt. Due to the construction of various canals, the watercourse was divided into pieces.
