Den Gamle Kale mellem Merendree og Vinderhoute strømmer stadig i dalen, som den blev skabt efter den seneste istid (ca. 10.000 f.Kr.). Hvad der i øjeblikket kaldes den Gamle Kale, var engang en del af et meget større afvandingssystem. Dette strakte sig fra Tielt over Aalter til Nevele (den nuværende Poekebeek) og derefter til Landegem, Merendree og Vinderhoute (den Gamle Kale). Nedstrøms var der dengang forbindelse til Moervaart i Wachtebeke. Tidligere dannede Poekebeek, Kale og Durme altså én flod hele vejen til Schelde. På grund af anlæggelsen af forskellige kanaler blev vandløbet delt op i stykker.
