Cross Chapel

Ommegangstraat z.nr. Z.g. "Kruiskapel" left of house no. 56, located along the former Poekevoetweg (cf. infra). Although this is not an ommegang chapel, it is still included in the prayers. Before 1893, there is only a cross at the location of the current intersection of the regional road N37 and the Poekestraat; in 1893, the Van Oost-De Roo family builds a chapel. This must give way in 1979 for the construction of the regional road N37. A new building was erected here in 1980 to replace the old cross chapel. The current chapel is in neo-Gothic style, built of brown brick under a slate gable roof and with tapering buttresses at the corners. Flat choir. The facade features a wide, sandstone pointed arch opening with wooden tracery and hammered glass in the arch field. Simple interior under a pointed vault with wooden spruces. Wooden cross with a plaster crucifix behind elegant, wrought iron gates. Against the right wall, a facade stone with the inscription "THIS OMNIGANG / CROSS CHAPEL / WAS / RECONSTRUCTED HERE IN 1980 / IN MEMORY / OF THE FAMILY / HENRI AND / NATHALIE / VERHAEGHE – VERBEKE / AND CHILDREN / PRAY FOR THEM."
