The artist Edmond Dubrunfaut (Denain - France, 1920).
The artwork: 1985
Edmond Dubrunfaut has been attracted to art from a very young age. The stained glass window and the mosaic of the Abbey of Tongerlo inspired Dubrunfaut to enroll in the Ecole nationale supérieure d’Architecture et des Arts décoratifs, La Cambre. Shortly after his debut, Edmond Dubrunfaut became interested in an art that is accessible to a broader audience through its themes and style. Driven by his desire to represent ideas in reality, he plays an active role in the founding of groups such as “Le Centre de Rénovation de la Tapisserie de Tournai” (1946), “Forces Murales” (1947), and “Art et Réalité” (1954). After that, there was a period in which Dubrunfaut created works on his own again.
He was particularly interested in frescoes, murals, ceramic panels, and tapestry art because they can be applied to large walls of public buildings and thus integrated into life.
The artist took off from a recommendation from UNESCO: “Let’s save the species, as there is a great threat hanging over nature, animals, trees,...”. The artist wants passersby to briefly stop at the Louiza Metro station and take the time to reflect on the survival of species. Especially now, as the technological forces that humans themselves have conjured up are actually escaping their control, the artist wants to act as a warning. He does this with the help of lines, colors, and shapes: the earth, the joy of flowers and fruits, the irreplaceable value of vegetative, animal, and human life. In the tapestry work and the panels in ceramic tiles, themes and style unfold in a rich vegetative and floral ornamentation that encompasses humans and animals and lovingly connects all living phenomena.
