Saint Peter's Station

After the death of Arsène Goedertier, his friend De Vos found in Goedertier's residence in Wetteren numerous "incriminating" documents, including copies of the 13 typed threat letters regarding the missing panel, a 14th handwritten, unfinished letter that was not sent, and a deposit slip from the Ghent Sint-Pieters station, where the typewriter used to write the extortion letters was found. The typewriter, of the Royal brand, was rented from the well-known office supply house Ureel on Vlaanderenstraat (right next to the famous café De Gentenaar, which is now a flower shop). This typewriter was not marked as evidence but was used by the police for years to type up reports.


Additionally, numerous sketches and 3 keys were also found, one of which would only later be identified as the key to the chancel of St. Bavo's Cathedral.


The three direct witnesses to the evening of Goedertier's death were, besides Georges De Vos, Dr. Romain De Cock, and Father Libertus Bornauw. For unexplained reasons, these direct witnesses were never interrogated by the public prosecutor's office of Dendermonde or Ghent. Therefore, several versions of Arsène's last words are still circulating. One of them supposedly stated that the panel could not be removed from its hiding place without being "seen".


The three direct witnesses were interrogated during WW II by Obereutnant Koehn, who was sent to Belgium on the orders of Goebbels himself to investigate matters relating to the "Ghent Altarpiece". For bizarre reasons, the Nazis had a significant interest in this work.
