Not impressed by the Eugène Verboekhovenplein (Place Eugène Verboekhoven) in front of you? You are certainly not alone.
Very soon after the construction of the roundabout in 1875 the liberal alderman Henri Berger scornfully compared the construction of rough imitation concrete and fences with the Bear pit in Bern Zoo (Switzerland). The nickname stuck.
The square is designed to create a link spanning the train tracks between Maalbeeklaan (Avenue du Maelbeek) and what is now Maarschalk Fochlaan (Avenue Maréchal Foch). The fact that the tracks are so deeply entrenched creates a pit which people attempted to make more attractive with the said concrete. The white pedestrian bridge was installed in 2014 and makes it easier to cross the square.
