Until the 19th century, Upper Evere was a district filled with agriculture and brick factories. Urbanisation only took hold after 1900. The municipal hall in Evere before you is a great symbol of this urbanisation. The building, which dates back to 1939, stands in what was then the new village centre.
The municipal hall is built in the so-called ‘streamline style’. This was inspired by the shape of large ocean liners from the time.
Further along you will cycle beside the brick walls of the cemetery of … Brussels! In 1784, emperor Joseph II decided that, for hygienic reasons, people should be buried beyond the city walls. Therefore, those living in Brussels took their dead out to Evere. Several mayors of Brussels are buried here, including Jules Anspach and Charles Buls. This also allowed more room in the city for renovation.
