Earthquake Liège 1983

The earthquake in Liège on November 8, 1983, at 00:49:34 was a relatively strong earthquake that caused considerable damage in the city of Liège and its surroundings. The epicenter of this relatively strong earthquake was located in Liège. The magnitude was 5.0 on the Richter scale and a maximum intensity of just over VII on the 12-point Mercalli scale. The hypocenter was only 5.8 kilometers deep beneath the city, resulting in significant damage in the immediate vicinity despite the low magnitude. Two people lost their lives due to falling debris and dozens were injured. Many parked cars were damaged by falling rubble. In Liège and the nearby Saint Nicolas, more than 16,000 houses were damaged, of which 37 were completely destroyed and 129 were declared uninhabitable. 6,000 people became homeless. The quake was followed by a number of aftershocks. The total cost of the damage was three billion Belgian francs, equivalent to about 75 million euros.
