This rural mill is already mentioned in a cijnsboek from 1391 under the name Hertboommolen. Over the past centuries, the windmill was given the lurid nickname 'The Tragic Mill' by a series of tragic events. On New Year's Day 1745, later members of Jan De Lichte's gang raided the mill house and murdered the miller. On April 22, 1917, in a second robbery murder, the miller's sister and the miller's servant were brutally murdered. Since then people speak popularly of "Tragic mill", as a sign of mourning the storm boards on the windmill blades were painted black. In the sixties, most scenes of the classic youth serial Captain Zeppos were shot on and around the mill. All tv-watching Flanders follows Zeppos' adventures. It is therefore not surprising that the popularity of the serial contributes to the fame of the mill. In the mill museum you will discover how the mill lived and lives on.
