Little Switzerland

Little Switzerland is a large nature reserve of six hectares. The site was a railway junction from 1878 to 1970 and owes its name to the raised railway embankments. In 1984, the city of Mortsel became the owner of the area. Since 1996, Natuurpunt has been working on the development and protection of this piece of greenery. Everyone is welcome at Little Switzerland. The area is freely accessible. It is best to start a walk at the Hoeve Dieseghem, Wouter Volcaertstraat 44. Other entrances can be found in the IJzerenweglei and the Heirbaan.
The Klein-Zwitserland nature reserve in Mortsel is a beautiful example of a young emerging forest. Pioneer plants, shrubs, oaks and birches have been growing here since the 1980s. Throughout the year you can enjoy fascinating plant and animal life. Cow parsley, tansy and sweet clovers colour the area. Many animals such as rabbits and hazel worms find a home there. The Hazelworm Trail introduces you to Little Switzerland.
