Garden City Moortebeek

In 1921, the cooperative tenants' society "Les Foyers collectifs" was founded with the aim of creating a new garden city. She bought about twenty hectares in Anderlecht, close to the old village of Moortebeek.

About 360 dwellings were built in the following years and from 1923 they were inhabited for the first time. The residents had to contend with a lot of problems: unpaved and muddy roads that were not equipped with sewers or street lighting. The houses were unfinished and potable water was not available. There were no shops or schools nearby and public transport to the city was impossible. The streets are named after famous writers: Sévigné, Ronsard, Rabelais, Tolstoy, Virgil, Shakespeare, Lamartine, Homer, Corneille and Fénelon.

Today, Moortebeek is a pleasant neighborhood that has managed to retain its individuality and uniform appearance. The city owes this to the cooperative that determines the colour of the facades and the choice of material for the windows and the infrastructure.
