The moorland area De Assels is surrounded by two arms of the Leie and the Ringvaart. The central part is a remnant of the extensive belt of open and low-lying meadows that used to lie along the Leie and is also referred to as 'the egg' due to its shape. Today, this is a beloved breeding area for wading birds. Natuurpunt bought 12 hectares of nature reserve in 2002 and worked with a farmer to tackle the overgrown area. As a result, buttercups, cuckoo flowers, large rattles, and true cuckoo flowers color the meadows again in spring.
