The nature reserve is an island cut by the Brussels-Ostend highway between Drongen and Afsnee, which is only accessible via one access road. The railway crosses the area. The Oude Leie winds through the landscape and forms a natural boundary between the low-lying lakes and the higher donk. The lake landscape consists of species-rich grasslands, interwoven with ditches. Every spring, godwits and lapwings breed here. In the short vegetation, they accompany their down chicks on their first search for food. Other breeding birds are slobber, squat and crested duck in the canals, bush warbler and reed bunting in the rougher parts, small karekite in the reed bed on the Boterput and kingfisher in the bank of the same Boterput. In winter, the area serves as a foraging area for snipe, buck, water pipit, many dozens of wigeons, curlews, ruffs, ... A circling buzzard, praying kestrel or hunting sparrowhawk are also regulars. There are two marked walks. The signposted Assels route of 6 kilometers also takes you past the viewing hut in the Pontstraat. The Hoge Blaarmeersenroute of 2.8 km is not signposted.
