We continue our route towards Wintam, approaching the site of the sea lock. You can drive up to the sea lock to closely observe the maneuvering of the ships. Do be careful on nice days, as this entire area with the municipalities of Ruisbroek, Wintam, Hingene, and Buitenland (Bornem) is highly sought after by cycling enthusiasts in Flanders. The island between the sea lock and the Rupel is a nature reserve.
The sea lock of Wintam was built in 1967. In 1953, a dike breach flooded the workers' district of Wintam, and the affected impoverished families were accommodated for a long time in wooden barracks next to the church.
It is also noteworthy that the sea lock here provides a direct connection to Brussels via the canal. As early as 1550, excavation work began for a canal from Brussels to the Scheldt, via the Rupel in Klein Willebroek. The canal itself has a rich history. At the time, it was the most modern canal in Europe. It was excavated by many workers by hand for about 11 years.
