Chapel in the Kalkenstraat
In honor of St. Anne.
The niche in the façade of "Pottekes Dammens" appurtenance (Damiaen Raedemaeker) replaces a relatively large chapel that was built around 1860 by Petrus Joannes Wauters in his front garden. It contained a statue of Saint Anne and Saint Roch, and a bench with room for five people.
The pastor of Opstal wanted to celebrate the centenary of the chapel in 1955, but the owners had just demolished it; They needed the vacant space for a planned expansion. The chapel disappeared and so did the visits during the month of May and the stopping of the procession during the Days of the Cross (church chairs replaced the bench).
To compensate, the new owner had a niche built in the new façade, large enough for a statue of Mary.
We do not own an image of the original chapel, therefore we must limit ourselves to a drawing of the niche.
