Along the Couthoflaan in Proven, somewhat hidden behind tall trees, stands the stately Couthof Castle. In 1763, Jean François de Sales Mazeman de Couthove, the council pensionary and clerk of the city of Poperinge, began the construction of a neoclassical castle on the estate. The lordship of Couthove had been purchased about twenty years earlier by the father of Jean François Mazeman. The residence was to serve as a country house for Jean François and his family. The castle remained in the possession of the Mazeman de Couthove family until 1945, when, due to a lack of heirs, the castle came into the possession of the d’Udekem d’Acoz family. Today, the estate belongs to Henri d’Udekem d’Acoz, the former mayor of Poperinge and uncle of the current Queen Mathilde.
