The Wellemeersen is a recognized nature reserve and Natura 2000 area in the municipality of Denderleeuw. It is a flood zone of the Dender, located north of the Leeuwbrug district and in the east of the borough of Welle. The Wellemeersen mainly cover an area between railway lines 50 and 50A in the south and east and the Dender in the west.
It is a bird-rich area characterized mainly by swamp forests, wet meadows and bomb pits. The Wellemeersen was protected as a landscape in 1980. The recognition of the nature reserve, with an area of about 64 ha, runs until November 18, 2024. In 2019, the Flemish Land Agency proposed a nature development plan to develop the nature reserve into a contiguous grassland, forest and swamp landscape.
On the information board at the end of the Rodestraat (left side with bench) you will find a map of the area.
There is a municipal Wellemeersenpad (6.9 km) and a Well- and Kapellemeersenpad of about 12 km.
