Vuylbeek spring

More than 100 springs in Brussels!

The Vuylbeek spring is one of the 5 permanent springs in the Sonian Forest (on the territory of Brussels) and is one of the forest springs that form the Woluwe. These springs and the seepage at the bottom of the valleys in the Sonian Forest are the result of the groundwater level that lies just below the surface in that area of the Sonian Forest. This groundwater layer is fed by rainwater and is situated in a layer of permeable Bruxellian sand, which in turn sits on a layer of impermeable Ieperian clay. The sand in the subsoil of the forest is, by the way, visible in the creek bed.
The source of the Vuylbeek feeds the stream of the same name, which along with the Karregatbeek and the Zwaanewijdebeek flows into the pond of Bosvoorde, thus forming the Woluwe. The name Vuylbeek is misleading. This name actually does not refer to the water (which is very pure) but rather to certain parts of the bed that are rust-colored due to the presence of iron ore in the subsoil of this valley.
