At the end of the 18th century, six ponds were still depicted in the Vuilbeek Valley on the Ferraris map. Four of them were gradually filled in due to siltation and natural sedimentation, but also by the removal of sludge from two other ponds that were voluntarily maintained for fish farming. In the aftermath of World War II, the swamp that remained at the site of these old ponds was drained and planted with poplars. In 1992, when the valley was classified as a nature reserve, its outlets were blocked and the poplars were removed so that the marshes and wet meadows could be restored. These are now rich in a great variety of flora and fauna.
