Meir roundabout

The Meir district was developed from 1910 onwards. It is one of the most beautiful in the municipality because it alternates beautiful Art Deco architecture with cosy green spaces. The Meir roundabout is the focal point, even if the buildings of interest extend far beyond it. The Meir district reflects the desire of the local councillors of the 1930s to integrate quality architecture into a green district, with the nearby Astrid Park providing the area with a green touch. Houses with front gardens along wide avenues were the norm at the time. Planned around 1910, the Meir district was not really urbanised until the interbellum. This explains why it is home to many houses in Art Deco and Beaux-Arts style, which were typical of the period. Brussels may be known for its Art Nouveau architecture, but Art Deco is well represented too, particularly in the Meir district. Definitely hop off your bike to take a look at the detailed designs of the stained-glass windows, mouldings and other geometric patterns on the buildings.
