Eddy Wally Monument

This monument for Eddy Wally bears the title “Chérie” because that song is his biggest and most recognizable hit, the song with which he broke through in 1966, earning a gold record and a number-one ranking in the Flemish charts. The song marked the beginning of his long career as “The Voice of Europe” and became so strongly associated with his image that it symbolizes his entire body of work, making it logical that this very title was immortalized on his monument. A fun fact: “Chérie” was composed and produced by the Dutch producer Johnny Hoes, and Eddy Wally later even made a Chinese version (Baobei), allowing his typical tear-jerking style to be heard far into China. Eddy Wally, the stage name of Eduard Van De Walle (Zelzate 1932 – 2016), was a Belgian singer known for hits like Chérie (1966), Dans met mij die laatste tango! (1969), Ik spring uit een vliegmachien (1996), and Dans mi amor (2003).
