In the cemetery, we still see the grave monument of the Martens family with a commemorative plaque.
At a corner of the cemetery towards the village square, a war memorial was built in honor
of the civilian and military victims of both World Wars. Their names
are inscribed on both sides. Among them, we see the name of the only soldier from Oeselgem
who fell during World War II: André Vanluchene, who died on May 25
in Beernem.
At the bottom, there is a memorial stone referring to the fallen of the 19th
Line Regiment with the honorable mention “Lys 1940 Leie.”
How many victims on both sides in total have fallen is not known for certain.
This monument reminds us - as a silent reminder - of the absurdity of every war. A
visit to this monument keeps us focused on the most important lesson that is sometimes forgotten
too quickly:
“NEVER AGAIN WAR!”
This is what we wish to pass on to you as a visitor.
