If you leave the railway tunnel and turn right, you will arrive at the Stationsplein where you can find the Antoine chip shop and café America. The station of Denderleeuw or 'de Stoasje': In 1855, when the Aalst-Geraardsbergen railway line was built, Denderleeuw got a station for the first time. The famous architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar made the design and opted for a rural station.
On 9 November 1918, the station and its surroundings were almost completely destroyed by the simultaneous explosion of 340 ammunition wagons after a bombing raid by Allied aircraft.
After the First World War, it was replaced by a low-rise building under a gable roof. During the Second World War, the station was attacked by the German occupying forces and the Allied troops without causing irreparable damage.
In 1962 it was demolished and replaced by the current station building. It is a sleek, at the time very modern design drawn by F. Verbeemen. The design of the passenger section is more reminiscent of the typical Expo style of the late 50s.
