The centre of Assenede

In the center of Assenede is the St. Peter and St. Martin's Church. The church was recently kaleidographed and painted in white. The oldest parts date back to the 11th century. All that remains of this originally Romanesque building is the crossing tower with octagonal storey, the transept and the main choir. On the bench, not far from the tree of freedom, is a statue of Diederik van Assenede, who, as a former clerk at the Flemish Court in the 13th century, became known as a translator and editor of the old French chivalric romance in verse "Floire et Blancheflor" or "Floris ende Blancefloer".

In addition to the liberty tree, you will also notice the pillory that was erected in 1771 under Count Della Faille d'Assenede and removed during Napoleon's French rule. In 1980, the local local history society put it back on the market.

On the other side, the old town hall of Assenede is now under scaffolding for a thorough restoration. This building from 1771 is an imposing late classical building, originally built as a country house or alderman's house of the craft of Assenede.
