Heating network Roeselare - Mirom

Beschrijving

A district heating system is an ecological alternative to individual heating boilers.

The principle is very simple: one large heat central, the waste energy plant of MIROM Roeselare, delivers hot water to buildings and homes through underground pipes. There, the heat is transferred (via a heat exchanger) to the heating installation of that building. The cooled water flows back to the heat central, where it is reheated. It is therefore a closed cycle, where the same water is reused each time.

Pioneers

The Roeselare district heating system has been around since 1986. In several Scandinavian countries, the technology has been successfully applied on a large scale for many decades. In Flanders, this was still new, and the Roeselare district heating system was unique for many years. During the first decades, about 20 buildings were provided with 'clean' heat, including the REO Auction and De Spil. Since 2016, there has been an acceleration. At that time, the heating network went under the water of the Sint-Sebastiaanspark, and further in the city, apartments, schools, and other buildings were also connected.

Why?

There are several reasons why a district heating system is a good idea. MIROM aims for maximum waste prevention, reuse, and recycling, but part of the waste cannot technically be avoided nor recycled. This residual waste is burned in the waste energy plant, with minimal emissions. By converting the heat released in this process into useful and usable energy, MIROM ensures maximum energy recovery. This offers many advantages.

Did you know …

  • As much as 34 kilometers of underground pipes circulate 1 million liters of water and thus avoid 10,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually?
  • There was a significant expansion of the heating network in the center of Roeselare in 2023: through the new town hall towards Klein Seminarie? Where, among others, the Sint-Michielskerk, Residentie ‘t Keerhof, Residentie ‘t goed van Verstraete, and residentie Sint-Michiel will be connected
  • That where the heating network is used, no fossil fuels need to be used such as heating oil and natural gas? That’s a good thing for the climate and for better air quality for everyone.
  • The northern side of the Fluvius heating network will be realized in December?
  • The residentie Roulevard will be connected in 2023?
