Description

Lucien Buysse was a Belgian professional cyclist from 1913 to 1933.

The new cyclist bridge between Deinze and the Balkan villages was given the name and face of Tour de France winner Lucien Buysse. Artist Jesse Van Gompel immortalized the cycling hero from Wontergem on the side of the bridge.

Buysse won a total of five Tour stages in his career: one in 1923, two in 1925 and two in 1926.

The 1926 Tour was the longest in history (5745 km), with seventeen stages averaging 338 km . Lucien Buysse - his brothers Jules and Marcel were also on the race - took the lead in the tenth stage by going on the attack during a huge snowstorm on the Col d'Aspin in the Pyrenees, putting him almost an hour ahead of his leader Bottecchia. Bottecchia got off and Buysse arrived in Paris as the winner.
