Eglise Saint-Joseph - Faulx-les-Tombes

St. Joseph's Church, built in 1879 in neo-Romanesque Byzantine style , is a masterpiece by Henri Beyaert. The building is constructed from local reddish and yellow sandstone rubble, with a bluestone border. The building is known for the effect created by the alternating stones.

The portal has a tympanum with a chronogram and a column with the attributes of the four evangelists: the eagle (John), the lion (Mark), the bull (Luke) and the man (Matthew).

The interior is constructed entirely of yellow sandstone with alternating red brick and blue stone , with exposed wooden beams and paneling. Beyaert worked with Paul Hankar, a specialist in wrought iron. Hankar made all the decorative ironwork, including the communion rails, the armrest for the pulpit and the light arms on each column. The pulpit was carved from a single block of stone by local artist François-Joseph Balthazart.
