Monument "Claudy Criquielion" - Huy

Since December 1 , 2015, a monument has stood in the steep left bend on the Mur de Huy in honor of the Belgian cyclist Claude Criquielion.

The most treacherous bend on the Wall of Huy – a gradient of 26 percent doesn't lie – was given a name. 2-time winner Claude Criquielion is now immortalized in a rock strip, a corrosive piece of asphalt, at 1 of the 7 chapels to the top.

In 1985, the line of the Flèche Wallonne was drawn on top of the Wall of Huy for the first time. The crowd goes crazy on the flanks. The radio warms them up for the arrival of their scrunchie . From the roundabout he ascends the Citadel , the sturdy precursor of the Wall. Turn right, struggle on the first meters, chapels flashing by. Sharply to the left, through a tunnel of noise. At the top, near the church, Criquielion ultimately has an almost 2-minute lead over Moreno Argentin.

In 1989 he kept that ultimate attack in his pocket for longer. In the bend where his monument now stands, he cleverly forces Dutchman Steven Rooks onto the hyper-steep inside. In the outside bend Criquielion jumps away with big jumps. For 'Claudy', cycling heaven is in Huy for good.

Claude Criquielion, also a former cycling champion , died in 1985 at the age of just 58 as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage resulting in brain death.
