From the lookout bridge in the middle of the Wijnegem park, you can see the remnants of a sixteenth-century Spanish water castle. On the left side of the inner garden, you can see the Jan Vleminck tower, and on the right stands the former coach house of the castle. These two buildings are the only remaining parts and together form the outer court (the forebuilding) of the castle.
Jan Vleminck 'the Elder' likely had the castle and associated buildings built around 1530. In the nineteenth century, the prestigious Vleminck tower underwent several changes that resulted in its current neo-Gothic appearance with slender windows and beautifully crafted facades. In 1978, the Vleminck tower was protected as a monument. The local government of Wijnegem has owned the park and the building since 1977. Since then, every effort has been made to restore this beautiful heritage gem as well as possible. In 2019, intensive restoration work began, and since the summer of 2021, the Jan Vleminck tower has been on display in all its glory again.
