In the midst of a residential area stands a remarkable remnant of World War II: Bunker L15. “As many as 43 bunkers were built in the territory of Sint-Katelijne-Waver in preparation for the Second World War. You can still find several of them in the municipality,” says Rudi. “The bunkers were part of the KW-Line, a defense line that was established between September 1939 and May 1940 between Koningshooikt and Waver, in Wallonia. The bunker was part of the front line.”
Bunker L15 was purchased by the municipality in 2007 for 650 euros to open it to the public with original materials as a witness to this piece of military history. “The bunker has concrete walls with a thickness of 1.3 meters, slightly more than one meter for the roof and one meter for the other sides. “To the right of the iron entrance, you can see a shell hole. When the enemy threw a shell into the bunker, it rolled back outside through an ingenious system of pipes, at the feet of the enemy.”
