The mill's origins date back to the 13th century , with a rebuilding in the 15th century .
The mill is situated on a ridge between Sint-Antelinks and Woubrechtegem and offers a beautiful view over the Flemish Ardennes landscape. From the mill you can see several other mills in the area.
Originally the mill was owned by the Norbertine Abbey of Ninove and was called Molen ter Rijst . During the French occupation it was confiscated and came into the hands of a private individual through an intermediary.
In 1817 the mill became the property of the Buyse family, from which it takes its current name.
The mill remained active until 1950 , but after the death of the last miller it fell into disrepair and eventually collapsed in 1976 due to wood rot.
At the initiative of the municipality of Herzele, the mill was completely rebuilt between 2007 and 2009 and made operational again.
The Buysesmolen is fully functional : it grinds grain again during demonstrations on mill days
The mill stairs lead you past a sack donkey to the flour loft , where you look straight at the flour chute and flour bin of the fore mill. The flour bin of the rear pair of stones , driven by the catch wheel, is located at the right rear of the flour loft. During grinding, the operation of this pair of stones is controlled by a ball regulator at the left rear. In the past, there was a third pair of stones , the smallest of the three, which lay against the wind weighing with added "belly".
Around the catch wheel is a wooden plank catch. The catch is of a very old type where the catch rope runs over a seesaw.
The mill has a 23-metre flight , equipped with traditional wind boards and brown sails.
