Hingenebroekpolder

The Agency for Nature and Forest will purchase the Hingenebroekpolder in Bornem in 2025. It concerns an area of about 82 hectares with significant natural value right in the heart of the Scheldt Valley National Park. The purchase fits within the broader policy to protect vulnerable nature in Flanders and to better equip ourselves against the impacts of climate change.

The Hingenebroekpolder is located in the Flemish Ecological Network (VEN) and is part of the special protection zone of the Schelde and Durme estuary from the Dutch border to Ghent. The area consists of alder floodplain forests, reed lands, bodies of water, and an ancient park forest.

The area has a high species richness. Forest plants such as lily of the valley, wood anemone, and yellow dead-nettle thrive here, and birds like the lesser spotted woodpecker, golden oriole, nightingale, great tit, and tawny owl find a safe breeding place. Birds of prey such as goshawk, sparrowhawk, buzzard, and honey buzzard are also present.
