The medieval fortification was located at a strategic point overlooking the Lesse valley and was built on or near the site of a previous Roman fort (castrum) .
The medieval fortification probably dates from the 10th to the 12th century , although some elements were modified later. It served to control the valley's passage and provided protection against raids.
The fortification is located between the Roman baths and the “Trou du Grand Duc” viewpoint on the hiking trail.
Remains are subtle, but archaeologically confirmed. It is believed that a wooden, or later stone, watchtower stood on the highest point of the site, the remains of which we see here. Access is thought to have been via the first floor only .
