Moorslede was near the front line and the trenches. Here, German soldiers dug underground passageways to protect themselves against enemy artillery. A bit farther along, in the open trenches, the soldiers were exposed not only to the artillery, but also to vermin and the weather. This formed a major challenge for the medical services.
