Moorslede se trouvait tout près de la ligne du front de la guerre de position. Les soldats allemands y creusaient des galeries souterraines pour se protéger de l'artillerie ennemie. Un peu plus loin, dans les tranchées ouvertes, les soldats étaient non seulement exposés à l'artillerie, mais aussi à la vermine et aux conditions météorologiques. Un défi de taille pour les services médicaux.
