Fosses-la-Ville

The main attraction of Fosses-la-Ville is the chapter church of Saint-Feuillen. The most remarkable part of the church is the imposing square tower with buttresses, flanked by two small spires. From its structure and shape, it is clear that this Romanesque building belongs more to the Rhenish style than to the Maasland style.


The base of the tower dates back to the 12th century. It is clear that it served as a defense tower against raiders and other attackers. For strategic reasons, it was only accessible via the church. The tower hosted church services for ordinary people, as they had no access to the church of the canons. The inscription "Ici est un puis" likely indicates a water supply that could be used in the event of a siege. The blue stone baroque spire has replaced a 15th-century construction since the 18th century, which had in turn taken the place of a wooden structure. The original cross and the old church clock face can still be seen in the garden of the rectory, at Place du Chapitre.
