Martyrs' Square

The Martyrs' Square (then still Saint Michael's Square) was laid out during the Austrian period (2nd half of the 18^th century) in a very modern architectural style for its time. Neoclassicism is characterized by symmetry, uniformly light-colored façades on the same building line, and the same roof height. This homogeneous square thus became a rare example of architectural shelter amid the Brussels cacophony. The balanced proportions and visual calm create a cozy feeling. You can pause for a moment on the wide benches and steps. Nothing suggests that just around the corner lies the busiest shopping axis of Brussels.

The name of the square refers to the fallen volunteers of the Belgian Revolution who rest in the crypt beneath the central monument in the ultimate shelter of eternity. The sturdy lady representing our homeland (Patria) and its constitution looks in the direction of Saint Michael's Street. This transition from calm to busy gives you time to prepare for a new flood of stimuli and impulses.
