The exchange building known as Beurs (Bourse), with its wide steps, is the ultimate place to gather in the centre.
As from 1870, the Medieval city made room for the installation of central lanes, which still remain an important north-south axis. Apartments, emporiums and brasseries aimed to attract the bourgeoisie to the centre. Public buildings such as the Beurs sprung up. The Beurs was designed by the architect Léon Suys and built between 1868 and 1873.
Anspachlaan (Boulevard Anspach) was transformed into a car-free pedestrian zone in 2015. This was partly thanks to amusing action by citizens in 2012, who organised several picnics on the square to call a halt to what was then a busy traffic intersection.
TIP: The metro station is a veritable bike hub. At the Cyclo bike point you can rent, park or arrange repairs to bicycles.
