exceptional natural sites in the heart of the Ardennes
Your route takes you from the Luxembourg border to the province of Liège, from the valley of the Salm to the valley of the Amblève. You start your adventure in the village of Gouvy, located in the far north of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in an area full of greenery, forests, and rivers with clear water. This is the premier area for nature lovers, as no less than eleven nature and ornithological reserves of Belgium are located within the municipality, a true ornithological treasure.
On foot, you follow the GRP 571 after leaving Gouvy, and you quickly arrive at the Valley of the Salm, a sub-basin of the Amblève. You pass by the beautiful village of Salmchâteau, which owes part of its name to this small waterway. By bicycle, you head east from Gouvy to Sankt-Vith, before heading to the valley of the Salm.
Both on foot and by bike, you will discover Vielsalm, known for its geological riches. Here you will find the famous honing stone ('coticule' in French) that is used as a whetstone for razors. There is a museum dedicated to this stone, which is unique in the world.
On foot, you will then reach Trois-Ponts and its stunning view of the Tour Leroux, 16.65 meters high. Beyond Trois-Ponts, the Salm flows into the Amblève. Both on foot and by bike, you will explore this exceptional valley and this beautiful river that springs from the edge of the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park and carves its deep bed into a valley with steep walls. You must not miss the famous waterfall of Coo, one of the most enjoyable attractions in Wallonia. It is the highest natural waterfall in Belgium, and the Amblève makes a leap into the depths of 15 meters.
This waterway will surprise you even more as it leads you to a magical place named Fonds de Quarreux. A 1.5 km walk along the river allows you to discover mysterious rounded rocks in the water, and perhaps you will learn more about the legend surrounding this fantastic place. Further, you will visit another natural pearl: the Caves of Remouchamps. You will enjoy the longest underground boat trip in Europe that is accessible to tourists! A true spectacle before you reach Aywaille, your final destination.
