A unique, varied, and adventurous hike through the beautiful city of Liège!
In this extraordinary adventure, we will take you on a journey through the hidden gems of the city of Liège, exploring part of the route along unpaved paths (muddy!). Prepare for a combination of urban exploration and natural discoveries as we traverse the city.
PART 1: STATION GUILLEMINS TO SAINT-NICOLAS - A HISTORICAL DISCOVERY JOURNEY
We begin our hike from the bustling train station of Liège and head towards Saint-Nicolas. Along the way, we pass the impressive Mémorial Interallié, a tribute to the fallen in World War I. Next to this monument, we find the abandoned Sacred Heart Church, which provides intriguing insights into the history of the city.
Our walk then leads us to the Terril Du Piron, a former mining hill that now serves as a lookout point over the city. Here, amidst nature, you can enjoy the first breathtaking views of Liège. Take the time to absorb the history as you explore this enchanting place.
PART 2: PARC AVROY TO THE CITADEL OF LIÈGE - HISTORICAL LIÈGE
From the green Parc Avroy, we head towards the old city center of Liège. Here, a captivating mix of history and architecture unfolds. Walk through the cobbled streets of the old town area, where you are surrounded by charming buildings, cozy squares, and local artisan shops. Visit the St. Paul’s Cathedral and admire the beautiful Gothic architecture that has withstood the centuries.
PART 3: FAVECHAMPS TO THE CITADEL AND TERRIL DE NOUVEAU BATTERIE - MINING HILLS AND NATURAL BEAUTY
From Favechamps, we start our ascent towards the Citadel of Liège. Although a large part of the citadel now houses a hospital, it still offers some of the most beautiful views of the city. As we approach the citadel, we experience the fusion of urban renewal and historical splendor.
We continue our journey to the highest point of this walk, the Terril de Nouveau Batterie at the border with Herstal. This former mining hill not only offers breathtaking views but also a touch of natural beauty from countless silver birches that are slowly dominating this mining hill. From here, we descend back towards the citadel and prepare for the next phase of our exploration.
PART 4: MONTAGNE DE BUEREN TO PARC DE LA BOVERIE - URBAN STEPS, ALLEYS, AND THE MEUSE
We begin this part of our walk by descending the iconic Montagne de Bueren and exploring the charming Rue de Carré. Along the banks of the Meuse, we follow a car-free path to the Outremeuse island, where Parc de la Boverie and the impressive Palace of Fine Arts of Liège await us.
Amidst this green splendor lies the Palace of Fine Arts, a masterpiece of architecture that forms a perfect conclusion to our journey through Liège. We cross the pedestrian bridge and return to Station Guillemins, where modern architecture merges with the rich heritage of this fascinating city.
