On the border of Lede, Erpe, and Aalst, you will discover the protected natural landscape Honegem-Solegem-Sint-Apollonia, a green gem where nature and history go hand in hand. The walk takes you past the Cottemmolen, a beautifully restored overshot water mill from 1572. During the Mill Day in April and often also on Open Monument Day in September, you can admire this historic mill in full operation.

The Solegembos, on the southern slope of the Keiberg, is an atmospheric remnant of an ancient forest. In spring, the forest transforms into a colorful carpet with, among other things, slender cowslips, wood anemones, marsh marigolds, and lesser celandine. With a bit of luck, you might also spot the rare wood star.

Along the way, bird lovers can enjoy numerous water and meadow birds. You walk past old peat pits and vast meadows, bordered by pollard willows and hedgerows. Where peat was once harvested, you now find a remarkable wetland full of life. Frogs, toads, and no less than four species of water salamanders feel at home here, including the striking crested newt.

The Honegemmeersen have a rich history as common pastureland. Until the middle of the last century, hay was cut here together, and children tended the animals during the summer. Although the landscape has changed in the meantime, beautiful flower-rich grasslands are still preserved in some places.

This walk offers a unique mix of peace, nature, and heritage – ideal for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the rural Flanders.
