Hiking in Meldert - Cheers!

For centuries, the area around Aalst, Affligem, and Asse was an important hop region. Hops were introduced here in the 16th century, but hop production especially flourished from the 17th century onwards: the yield from the Land of Aalst accounted for more than half of the European production at that time. Together with the area around Poperinge, this region remained one of the most important hop centers in Flanders until the 19th century, although cultivation has now almost completely disappeared.

Hops also influenced the landscape. During the summer, the hop plants climbed up meters-high wooden stakes. The reason? Hops were an important ingredient in brewing beer. The hop cone gives beer its typical bitterness and helps in its preservation.

During this walk, you will learn about this rich hop history. Together with the city of Aalst, Heritage Cell Denderland takes you through the hop story, with narratives and images.
