Landscape
The Scheldeland crosses the entire city and, in addition to the river itself, also includes a number of areas that are related to it in one way or another. These include the banks along both sides of the Scheldt. For Antwerp, the river is of crucial importance. The city originated along it and owes its current prosperity largely to accessibility by water. The emphasis is often on the economic function, but the Scheldt also plays a major role for nature and quality of life. The landscape is the habitat for many special species of fauna and flora and belongs almost entirely to the Natura2000 network. This includes protection areas at European level. In the future, the role of the Scheldt will continue to increase in order to absorb the negative effects of climate change. The stream carries cool air to the city and is responsible for the drainage of water.
