Bruynleegtpad

The Bruynleegt path is good for about 9 km of reed fields, wet meadows, marshy woods, fish ponds, heath, agricultural land, and forests. However, there are shorter options possible (5 to 6 km).

You start from the parking lot of the Berkenbeek school (Nieuwmoersesteenweg 113c). From the parking lot, you first walk a short distance towards Wuustwezel to cross over to the Eglantierdreef. From there you follow the walking junctions.

If you arrive at the observation tower de Klot, be sure to climb it. The tower is in a very special location: in the middle of the Nature Reserve de Maatjes, a cross-border marsh and reed landscape that is mostly located in the municipalities of Zundert, Wuustwezel, and Kalmthout. Near the point where the three municipalities meet, the 7-meter high observation tower was built.

The name 'de Klot' refers to a lump of peat or turf. Between the years 1250 and 1750, peat was extracted here on a nearly industrial scale. The peat was transported to Roosendaal, Bergen-op-Zoom, Antwerp,... From the tower, you can still see peat relics in the landscape.

Furthermore, plans from World War I show that the Death Wire ran at the height of the tower. As part of the many commemorations, a reconstruction of this wire has been placed at the foot of the tower.
