Village center Wieze

Since 1981, the village center of Wieze has been protected: Nieuwstraat, Wiezeplein, Sasbaan, and Schrovestraat. The most notable building in the center is the St. Salvator Church.

The village center developed at a location where one of the connecting roads existing since the early Middle Ages passed, namely the Moorsel-Mespelare road. The current Wiezeplein includes the former village with the centrally placed parish church previously surrounded by an oval walled cemetery, abolished in 1865; to the northwest of the younger highway Aalst-Dendermonde via Herdersem and Denderbelle, connected by a wide street or a narrower part of the village square south of the village church. Several houses from Nieuwstraat and Schroverstraat were also incorporated into Wiezeplein during the most recent street name change. In the redevelopment of the square in 1999-2000, the shape of the former cemetery was indicated with differently colored cobblestones. The buildings at the former Dorpsplaats, the rectangular square south of the church, have preserved their original appearance quite well. Both long square walls (west and east side) are still dominated by old low village houses mainly originating from former inns.

Chapel of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows

Kapittelstraat
Originally at least dating back to the 17th century as the chapel is indicated on a map from 1662 by A. Hendricx, known from a copy from 1765. In 1959, the roadside chapel was rebuilt using demolition materials in the old model.
