Description by the author

At five special locations in Wuustwezel, five listening posts tell a story of landscape evolution. By 'turning the wheel', the history of these areas comes to life again, and you will look at the landscape with different eyes in the future. The listening posts are connected by 2 cycling loops but can also be approached by car up to 20 meters away. Each listening post features an information board with photos and a QR code. By scanning the codes, you are redirected to additional information about the areas.

Where are the listening posts located?

At the current library, the first listening post proudly stands, also the starting point of both cycling loops. The wild heathlands that characterized the area of the Gasthuishoeves in the 13th century have been transformed into fertile lands where crops are grown and animals are raised.

Then take the beautiful cycling and walking path from the center to Gooreind, and you will encounter the second listening post at the convent domain of the Franciscans. In 1770, this area was characterized by heath and fens, but just 100 years later, there was already talk of buildings, forests, meadows, and vegetable gardens. A few years later, the sisters purchased the domain and used it to sustain themselves.

Finally, a listening post could not be missing at the observation tower de Klot in the nature reserve De Maatjes. At the top of the tower, you can still observe the landscape evolution. After peat extraction ceased, the landscape was allowed to evolve freely into a heath and agricultural landscape.

Since September 2024, there has been a new listening post at the chapel of Westdoorn, the sixth in our municipality. Turn the 'wheel' of the post to learn more about the rich history of this place.
This listening post is not located on the cycling route, but you can reach it by making a small detour from cycling junction 13 to junction 87.

Pick up your free brochure at the Tourist Office of Wuustwezel, Dorpsstraat 36.
