The border between Canada and the US was drawn at the 49th parallel. It is the longest straight land border in the world. Right on that border is the Peace Arch. So the Peace Arch is exactly on the 49th parallel north. The 20.5 meter high building was unveiled in 1921 to commemorate the Treaty of Ghent in 1814 . The building bears the Flag of the United States and the Flag of Canada. There are two inscriptions on the frieze. On the US side it says "Children of a common mother" and on the Canadian side it says "Brethren dwelling together in unity". The monument represents a gate. Inside the gate is a gate that cannot be closed. The inscription reads: "May these gates never be closed. The park is widely used for events.
