Airolo is a political municipality of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.
The municipality is located in the westernmost part of the Valle Leventina. It includes, in addition to the capital Airolo, the villages of Valle, Madrano, Brugnasco, Fontana, Nante, and the uninhabited centers of Albinasca and Bedrina.
Airolo is located at the southern entrance of the important Gotthard Base Tunnel. Consequently, the Basel-Chiasso railway line and the A2 motorway run through it. It is also the starting point of the road that leads over the 2108 meter high Gotthard Pass to Andermatt in the canton of Uri. North of the town, the uninhabited Valle Canaria opens up. In winter, you can ski and cross-country ski on the slopes of Pizzo Mezzogiorno (2503 m), with Airolo having 30 kilometers of slopes. During the summer season, the area attracts many mountain hikers.
