Leaving Saxon in the heart of the Rhone Valley, the first switchbacks of the col du Lein wind through meadows and sunny orchards. The road follows the torrent des Croix and crosses the hamlets of Sapinhaut and l'Arbarey. Little by little, the view over the central Valais below opens and offers a panorama from Martigny to Sion. As you approach the summit of the pass, the Pierre Avoi mountain that has dominated the climb will become more and more massive and impressive. The last few hundred metres are on dirt road as you cross over above the Val de Bagnes.
The col du Lein is one of the most demanding climbs in central Valais. It allows you to pass from Saxon to Vollèges, thus also the possibility to travel from Sion to Verbier on small roads without having to pass through Martigny! The beginning of the climb takes place in an environment typical of the Valais plain – apricot trees, vineyards and apple trees surround you during the first few kilometres. Then you cross through mountain pastures as you follow the countless switchbacks before reaching a pine forest before the summit of the pass. The last part of the climb is full of surprises as it unfolds on a small section of unpaved road that gives an extra special touch to this classic route!
